Greenpeace Philippines, along with partner organizations, are encouraging the public to participate in World Meat-Free Week, which begins on Monday, June 11, and runs until June 17. The groups will be holding events throughout the country, including Bacolod City and Iloilo City, discouraging the consumption of meat as a means of health and environmentalism.

According to a press release, “Intensive meat production drives deforestation and causes soil, water, and air pollution.” They also noted, “Most meat eaters still do not understand the link between industrial meat consumption and its negative impact on the environment.”

They also cited the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which suggested red meat could be “carcinogenic,” or may cause cancer.

The main opening event will take place in Quezon City, but, besides the Western Visayas, there will also be observances in Zamboanga City and Iriga City./WDJ
