Barangay Felisa Captain Francisco Hilado has asked the Bacolod Environment and Natural Resources Office (BENRO) and the city’s garbage hauler, International Solid Waste Integrated Management Specialists Inc. (I-SWIMS), to address the foul odor coming from the landfill and waste collection trucks.
In his letter dated June 8, Hilado raised concerns about the persistent foul odor emanating from the sanitary landfill and from waste collection trucks passing through and operating within the barangay.
“Residents have repeatedly expressed concerns regarding the unpleasant odor which affects the comfort, health and well-being of our constituents, particularly those residing near the routes used by garbage trucks,” Hilado said.
He added that it has also been observed that some waste collection vehicles are not being regularly washed or properly sanitized, resulting in foul odors and possible leachate spillage along public roads.
Considering the potential environmental and public health impacts of these conditions, Hilado stressed the need for the city to conduct an immediate inspection and assessment of landfill operations and waste collection vehicles.
“We likewise request the strict implementation of regular cleaning, washing and sanitation procedures for all garbage trucks, as well as the adoption of effective odor-control measures at the landfill facility,” Hilado said.
He said he is hopeful that BENRO and I-SWIMS will address these concerns for the safety and health of their constituents.
Meanwhile, Gasataya said he has already instructed BENRO to coordinate with I-SWIMS to address the concerns raised by the barangay./MAP, WDJ
