A 16-year-old male cancer patient from Bacolod City’s Barangay Cabug was allegedly assaulted by a group of teenagers during what was initially described as a friendly sparring activity at a local basketball court.
The incident came to light only on May 4 after a video of the alleged altercation circulated online, the victim’s mother said in a radio interview.
According to her account, her son, who is currently undergoing treatment for Stage 4 testicular mixed germ cell tumor, was invited to engage in sparring with other youths last April 9.
The victim initially declined and requested protective gloves but was reportedly pressured to join.
Once he agreed, he was allegedly punched, and after falling to the ground, he was further kicked when he attempted to defend himself.
He then fled.
The mother said the group allegedly pursued the teenager and that around six youths were seen participating in the assault, although only four have so far been identified.
She added that the victim did not immediately disclose the incident due to fear and his medical condition.
The teenager reportedly suffered difficulty standing for about two weeks following the incident before gradually recovering mobility.
The family only became aware of the incident after the video surfaced online, prompting them to seek assistance.
A blotter report has already been filed, and the matter has been elevated to barangay authorities for investigation and mediation.
The mother is appealing to the parents of the involved youths to cooperate with authorities, and is also urging barangay officials to strengthen monitoring of minors in the area, noting that groups of teenagers are often seen gathering outside late at night.
Authorities are expected to further investigate the identities of the remaining individuals involved and determine appropriate actions in coordination with local officials./CJ, WDJ
