Negrense Angel Canino once again led the charge as the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Spikers swept the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors, 25-15, 25-20, 25-19, to remain unbeaten in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday, March 7.
Canino delivered a solid all-around performance with 12 points, eight excellent digs and six excellent receptions to power the Lady Spikers to their fifth straight win of the season.
De La Salle also welcomed back Shevana Laput, who returned after missing two games and contributed nine points from eight attacks and one block.
Kathrina del Castillo also provided support with 10 points for the Lady Spikers.
La Salle asserted control early in the match, dictating the pace from the opening set and using its depth and defensive stability to keep UE from gaining momentum.
Despite the convincing victory, La Salle assistant coach Noel Orcullo said the team still needs to clean up its mistakes.
“Pinaalalahanan lang ang team na respeto lang sa kalaban, kaya medyo hindi naging maganda ‘yung outcome, although nanalo. Unang-una, ang dami naming errors, especially services. Kailangan pang magtrabaho,” Orcullo said.
Khy Cepada paced the Lady Warriors with 14 points, while Bea Zamudio chipped in nine, but UE remained winless after six outings.
In the other match, the Adamson University Lady Falcons (3-2) pulled off a stunning result after sweeping the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses (2-3), 27-25, 25-22, 25-12.
Shaina Nitura powered the Lady Falcons with 22 points on 19 attacks and three blocks, while Frances Mordi registered a double-double of 20 points and 10 excellent receptions.
Regina Jurado led UST with 18 points, while rookie Avril Bron added 10.
Angeline Poyos was limited to just five points for the Golden Tigresses./ASC, WDJ
