The Philippine National Police (PNP) will mobilize all its available assets to provide immediate relief and security to communities affected by the recent activities of Kanlaon Volcano.

“I have directed the activation of our hazard response teams to ensure the safety of our kababayans amid the continuing activity of Kanlaon Volcano,” PNP chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez, Jr. said in a statement.

Nartatez issued the directive after state volcanologists recorded five volcanic earthquakes and a staggering emission of 2,880 tons of sulfur dioxide on February 28 alone.

The resulting ashfall blanketed more than 133 villages across the Negros Island Region (NIR).

The volcano remains under Alert Level 2 as of yesterday.

Due to the volcano’s continuing activity, entry into the four-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone around it remains prohibited.

Local government units (LGUs) have enforced preemptive measures to prevent residents from entering high-risk areas.

Nartatez said police officers have been tasked to assist LGUs in strictly enforcing this restriction.

“Our personnel will also continue coordinating with local authorities to address the needs of communities affected by the volcano’s eruption,” he said.

Police officers from nearby areas are on standby in case additional reinforcements are needed, Nartatez added as he urged the public to strictly heed the instructions and advisories of local authorities for their safety. (PNA)
