Bacolod City formally sent its delegation to the first-ever Negros Island Region Athletic Association Meet (NIRAAM) on Wednesday, February 25, fielding 626 student-athletes and 276 coaches and training staff during ceremonies held at Bacolod City National High School.
Mayor Greg Gasataya said the city is aiming for an overall championship finish at the inaugural meet, citing the athletes’ strong potential to deliver gold medals and represent Bacolod in national competitions.
To back the campaign, the city government released P9,471,000 in cash allowances, alongside uniforms, shoes and hoodies.
Each delegate also received P10,500 for training and related needs, with an additional P2,000 per participant set for release on the opening day of NIRAAM to boost morale.
City officials said the expanded financial support addresses a common challenge faced by young athletes who often shoulder training and competition costs.
“By providing this training allowance, it will boost their morale and help with their needs,” Gasataya said, noting that many student-athletes rely on sports performance to secure scholarships.
Several athletes expressed readiness ahead of the regional tilt.
Fourteen-year-old Sam Pampag, a two-time gold medalist at the Batang Pinoy from Romanito P. Maravilla Sr. National High School, said she is confident of defending her title after months of disciplined training.
Meanwhile, Brianna Nikola Ang, team captain of the Tay Tung Thunderbolts girls’ volleyball squad from Tay Tung High School, acknowledged the pressure of competition but said the team has worked through heavy conditioning to prepare for the meet./CJ, WDJ
