Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson has raised concern over the sharp increase in overnight parking fees at the Bacolod-Silay Airport, warning that the new rate places an added financial burden on travelers and motorists.

The overnight parking fee at the airport has surged from P200 to P600, a 200-percent increase that has sparked criticism from the public and local officials.

“Of course, it hurts the pocket. Even at P200, we already felt the pinch, but people accepted it because they valued the safety and security of the area,” Lacson said, adding that tripling the fee could discourage motorists from using the official parking space.

He said the hike is particularly difficult for frequent travelers and families who rely on the airport for domestic and international trips.

In an interview, the governor noted that even the previous rate was already considered expensive by many users but was largely tolerated because of the security and safety provided in the airport’s parking facility.

Lacson pointed out that high parking fees are a common issue in major airports, citing Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2, where steep rates have reportedly led to reduced parking utilization.

He warned that a similar situation could unfold at Bacolod-Silay Airport if the issue is left unaddressed.

Amid growing public concern, the Bacolod City council has adopted a resolution urging Bacolod Lone District Representative Alfredo Abelardo Benitez to initiate an inquiry into the fee increase.

The council seeks to determine whether the adjustment is justified and aligned with public interest.

Local officials said the inquiry aims to balance airport operational needs with the welfare of the commuting public, especially as Bacolod-Silay Airport serves as a key gateway to Negros Occidental./CJ, WDJ
