A labor group strongly criticized Senator Rodante Marcoleta over his recent remarks concerning Kalayaan Island, calling the statement “unpatriotic” and demanding that he be declared persona non grata for allegedly undermining the country’s territorial claims.
In a press statement released yesterday, the General Alliance of Workers Association (GAWA) said Marcoleta’s comments diminish the sacrifices of Filipino heroes who fought to defend the nation’s sovereignty.
GAWA Secretary General Wennie Sancho described the statement as an affront to the Constitution and a betrayal of public trust.
“Kalayaan Island and all of the country’s territorial claims are non-negotiable,” Sancho said, stressing that any position perceived as weakening Philippine sovereignty runs counter to the mandate of an elected senator.
GAWA urged the Senate to take action against Marcoleta, arguing that his remarks could have serious implications on his duties as a lawmaker.
The group claimed that, as a senator, Marcoleta is sworn to uphold the Constitution and protect national interests, and that statements viewed as compromising sovereignty may constitute a breach of duty.
The labor alliance further called on authorities to examine possible consequences, including disciplinary action within the Senate, impeachment proceedings, or other legal remedies provided under the Constitution and existing laws.
“We are demanding accountability from our leaders,” Sancho said, adding that GAWA is urging Marcoleta to retract his statement and clearly affirm his commitment to defending Philippine territorial rights.
The group also appealed to the public to remain vigilant, emphasizing that issues of sovereignty require unity and firmness.
“Our heroes did not give their lives for us to compromise our territorial integrity,” the statement read.
“As a nation, we must stand united against any erosion of our sovereign rights,” it added./CJ, WDJ
