Victorias City in Negros Occidental is showcasing sustainable and inclusive ecotourism through the establishment of the P13-million birder’s paradise in the Gawahon Eco-Park, located within the North Negros Natural Park.

On Wednesday, June 11, Department of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco and Mayor Javier Miguel Benitez led the groundbreaking ceremony and signing of the memorandum of agreement for the implementation of the flagship initiative.

The project aims to transform Gawahon Eco-Park into a premier birdwatching and ecotourism destination, an initiative anchored on biodiversity conservation, community development and sustainable livelihoods.

According to the DOT, key components include an observation deck, bird information center, organic café, and an infrastructure technology that reflects ecological sensitivity and community empowerment.

Victorias City obtained the P13-million cash grant after winning in the DOT’s nationwide Tourism Champions Challenge (TCC) for its entry, “A Birder’s Paradise: Haven for Sustainable and Inclusive Eco-Tourism.” It placed fourth among the top five local government units (LGUs) in the Visayas and was among the 15 proposals selected across the country.

In her message, Frasco commended Victorias City for its “forward-thinking proposal” as she reaffirmed the DOT’s strong support for “initiatives that position ecotourism as a catalyst for inclusive progress and environmental resilience.”

“The TCC was created to empower LGUs to craft localized tourism solutions that reflect both national priorities and community needs. Gawahon, a birder’s paradise, is proof that when national vision aligns with local determination, we can build something truly meaningful and lasting,” Frasco said.

Benitez, who was elected congressman of Negros Occidental third district in the May 12 elections, thanked the DOT, Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, and the Office of the President for recognizing Victorias City’s commitment to sustainable tourism.

“The Gawahon project is more than just infrastructure, as it represents an investment in environmental preservation, inclusive growth, and long-term prosperity for Victoriasanons,” he said. (PNA)
