The Department of Education (DepEd) – Schools Division Office of San Carlos City has assured the public that it is taking decisive steps to safeguard learners after a Grade 9 student of Julio Ledesma National High School (JLNHS) was stabbed by his fellow schoolmate on Tuesday, June 23.
In a statement, DepEd-San Carlos said it immediately coordinated with the school administration to implement measures aimed at ensuring the safety, protection and well-being of the affected learner and the broader school community.
The student’s stabbing incident occurred after class hours and beyond the school campus.
Prior to the incident, the learner had reportedly raised concerns with a teacher regarding a possible threat involving fellow students.
School officials had planned to further discuss the matter during school hours, but the follow-up conversation was not completed before classes were dismissed.
DepEd also disclosed that JLNHS had recently conducted classroom discussions and debriefing sessions to promote safety awareness, encourage vigilance among students, and remind them to seek assistance from trusted adults whenever necessary.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The division office said it is closely monitoring developments while working with school officials, parents and concerned agencies to ensure due process and prioritize the welfare of the learner involved.
As part of its response, DepEd-San Carlos is enhancing campus security measures and strengthening coordination efforts to maintain a safe and secure learning environment.
Support interventions, including activities addressing student safety and psychosocial well-being, are also being rolled out for members of the school community.
The agency likewise appealed to parents and guardians to maintain open communication with their children, provide proper guidance, and remain actively involved in matters affecting their safety and development.
DepEd-San Carlos said further verified information will be released through its official communication channels and reiterated its commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive and supportive environment where every learner is protected and valued./CCJ, WDJ
