Negros Occidental continues to be free from monkeypox (mpox), the provincial Department of Health (DOH) said after Iloilo province confirmed two laboratory-tested cases and four suspected cases yesterday.

DOH-Negros Occidental head Adrian Hort Ramos said the declaration is based on comprehensive epidemiological surveillance conducted across the entire Negros Island Region.

Ramos emphasized that despite the current absence of mpox cases in the province, the DOH remains vigilant and cautious about emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

The DOH is closely monitoring any new outbreaks to ensure early detection and response.

Mpox, a viral disease, presents symptoms similar to other infections, including fever, headache, body and back aches, and swollen lymph nodes.

The virus is primarily transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact, making awareness and preventive measures crucial.

Ramos advises residents to seek immediate medical consultation if they experience any symptoms associated with mpox or other infectious diseases.

Early diagnosis and treatment are vital to prevent the spread of the virus and protect community health.

The DOH continues to encourage the public to maintain good hygiene practices, avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms, and stay informed through official health advisories./JB, WDJ
