In response to the vehicular accident over the weekend along Diversion Road in Iloilo City’s Mandurriao district, which left one couple killed, the Iloilo City Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO) called on city motorists to “respect” crosswalks.
The couple, earlier identified as Joe Marie and Alnie Dinah Pet-Osano, were crossing the street using the crosswalk when they were struck by a speeding sports car.
“To all drivers, respect the pedestrian lane,” said PSTMO head Jeck Conlu. “If you [have] had an experience paying for traffic fines, I know, for sure, that you are also aware of the importance of pedestrian lanes.”
“Based on the CCTV [footage] that I, together with some personnel, have reviewed, it was really a case of reckless driving,” he added.
In February 2018, after a senior citizen was killed after being struck by a motorcycle while crossing Bacolod-Murcia Road in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City Councilor Caesar Distrito penned a resolution calling for reflectorized signage.
In an interview with Watchmen Daily Journal at the time, he said reflectorized signage placed before and after crosswalks will serve as a “precautionary measure.”
The city councilor added, poor lighting in the area contributed to the accident, aside from alleged speeding by the motorcyclist./WDJ
