Following a series of transgressions by Phoenix Pulse Fuel Masters forward Calvin Abueva, the PBA Commissioner’s Office recently penalized the player with an indefinite suspension and a P70,000 fine. In a statement released last Tuesday, PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial said the punishment seeks to “instill discipline and maintain professionalism in the league.”
“The indefinite suspension should serve as a stern warning for Abueva and other players to act as professional athletes and that unbecoming conduct or any act or statement that is prejudicial or detrimental to the PBA will be severely punished,” he added.
Abueva was initially involved in a verbal altercation with the girlfriend of Blackwater Elite point guard Bobby Ray Parks, Jr. The Phoenix player was then caught on camera making obscene gestures towards the female fan and her companions.
Last Sunday, during a game against TNT KaTropa, Abueva was called for a technical foul in the first quarter off a second motion offense against Anthony Semerad. He was later ejected after delivering a clothesline on Terrence Jones. The latter was seen as a retaliatory act as Abueva had been struck in the groin earlier in the game but the referee failed to make a call.
