The Western Visayas was rocked by two early morning earthquakes yesterday with a 3.5-magnitude tremor striking east of Caluya, Antique, followed by a 2.0-magnitude tremor recorded in an area west of Candoni, Negros Occidental.

The Antique quake struck around 2:10 a.m. with a Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) bulletin reporting no damages as a result of the incident, nor were there any anticipated aftershocks.

According to the Mercalli Intensity Scale, earthquakes that range between 3.0 and 3.9 in magnitude are considered between a Level II and III, where a few people feel the tremor, especially those on the upper floors of buildings. In some cases, the seismic activity may create a sensation similar to a passing truck.

Earlier this week, a 3.0-magnitude earthquake struck just west of Sipalay City, Negros Occidental.

Meanwhile, just under two hours after the Antique quake, seismic activity was recorded just after 4:00 a.m. in Candoni.

A subsequent Phivolcs bulletin also reported no damages as a result of the incident, nor were there any anticipated aftershocks.

Earthquakes ranging between 1.0 and 3.0 in magnitude are often classified as a Level 1, where very few even feel the tremor./WDJ
