Cauayan Mayor John Rey Tabujara is calling for an immediate probe into the stampede that took place at the town’s gymnasium late Thursday afternoon.
During a radio interview yesterday morning, Tabujara said municipal officials want to identify who shouted “fire,” which caused those inside the establishment to stampede towards the exit.
At least 28 people were confirmed injured following the incident, with one reportedly suffering severe injuries after being stepped on by the fleeing crowd.
The mayor said the town was celebrating family day for Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries. During the event, a performer, as part of a competition, used fire for a prop, which likely triggered the stampede.
The victims were immediately rushed to the town’s district hospital for treatment.
Tabujara added, the municipal government will shoulder the medical expenses.
Town police and representatives from the town’s social welfare and development estimate there were around 4,000 people in the gymnasium at the time of the incident./DGB, WDJ
