Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) director, Police Senior Superintendent Francisco Ebreo, yesterday expressed support for a proposal by President Rodrigo Duterte to arm barangay officials and tanods.
In an interview with Watchmen Daily Journal, Ebreo said barangay officials and tanods are the first responders in their respective communities and called it “dangerous” for officials to respond to a crime in progress unarmed.
He added, the proposal is also backed by the Philippine National Police.
Under the proposal, barangay officials and tanods would be issued 9mm pistols or 12-gauge shotguns.
Last month, Barangay Captain Roy Pagapang of Isabela, Negros Occidental reportedly shot and wounded a couple.
He eventually surrendered to police, claiming self-defense and said one of the victims, Jome Gelacio, was earlier subpoenaed by the barangay following several complaints and refused to comply./DGB, WDJ
