The Bago City District Jail warden and his deputy were recently relieved of duty by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-Region VI (BJMP-6) over last week’s reported death of inmate Reneboy Alvarez.
According to BJMP-6, Jail Senior Inspector Alexander Sy and Senior Jail Officer 3 (SJO3) Omar Joseph Ginete were relieved of duty last Monday while an investigation is underway looking into Alvarez’ death.
Bago City police chief, Police Chief Inspector Joefer Cabural, also released the findings of their own investigation and determined, after undergoing a routine briefing following his transfer from a Himamaylan City jail facility last week, the deceased allegedly “talked back” to the dorm coordinator.
The said actions reportedly angered the other inmates, who were said to have “mauled” Alvarez after he punched the dorm coordinator.
Cabural said around 20 inmates were involved in the incident, which resulted in Alvarez’ death.
He further added, an autopsy showed the inmate died from head and lung trauma.
According to the BJMP, Alvarez had been involved in prior fights and was repeatedly transferred between jail facilities throughout the province.
The slain inmate was arrested on charges of illegal possession of firearms and explosives, attempted murder, and direct assault./DGB,
