The Department of Tourism (DOT) touted the Philippines as a “faith tourism” destination, claiming the predominant Roman Catholic presence can be utilized to bring in visitors.
“Plans are underway to make the Philippines a destination with unique spiritual significance that will attract millions,” she said. “The Philippines is an ideal destination [for] religious pilgrimage.”
The cabinet secretary noted the recent Dinagyang Festival of Iloilo City and the Sinulog Festival of Cebu City, both based in religious celebration, where millions gathered for the festivities.
Tulfo-Teo said a possible celebration is planned for 2021 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in Cebu, which introduced Christianity to the country./JSG, WDJ
