After an initial autopsy of slain Aniceto Lacson Elementary School teacher Eric Geronga determined he was killed from a gunshot wound to the left side of his head, Cadiz City police are still unsure if he died as a result of a suicide or by unidentified gunmen.
Geronga, a resident of the city’s Barangay Daga, was found dead near his home over the weekend.
Police also discovered a .357 caliber revolver with five live bullets, and one empty .357 caliber shell.
According to his wife, Gina, he had declined an invitation to attend an event last Friday evening, claiming he was tired. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from 7:26 p.m. that evening showed Geronga meeting two individuals who were passing by on a motorcycle.
Upon initial investigation, police reported the shot was made at a very short distance with the firearm found in the victim’s possession, leading them to believe it was a suicide. However, investigators suggested someone else may have fired the weapon at close range, who then returned the firearm to the victim.
Scene of the crime operatives are still studying the slug taken from the victim’s head to see if it is the same caliber as the recovered gun./DGB, WDJ
