“The power of the lawyer is in the uncertainty of the law.” –Jeremy Bentham

The results of the 2016 bar exams showed law schools outside “Imperial Manila” are improving and can no longer be taken for granted. For the first time in history, perennial “topnotchers,” the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, San Beda College, the University of Sto. Tomas, Far Eastern University, the University of the East, and De La Salle University, failed to dominate the Top 10.
The “big guns” were overshadowed by “promdi,” or provincial, law schools, led by the University of San Carlos in Cebu, Silliman University in Negros Oriental, Andres Bonifacio College in Zamboanga del Norte, the University of San Agustin in Iloilo City, Ateneo de Davao University in Davao City, and Northwestern University in Ilocos Norte.
With a passing rate of 59.06 percent, one of the highest in history, it is projected a majority of the 3,747 new lawyers (out of 6,344 who took the exam) to be sworn in on May 22 will be alumni of “promdi” schools.
The results of this year’s exam will be remembered when “promdi” parents considering sending their son or daughter to law school. It no longer seems necessary to enroll at a school far away, in and around the nation’s capital, when some of the best law schools are outside Metro Manila.

Filipinos have been warned to be careful when spending extended periods outside, due to the unprecedented humidity in the Philippines this summer; particularly, with many recent deaths being attributed to heat stroke.
Who are prone to heat stroke? According to health experts, those with chronic illnesses, like heart disease; the obese; individuals afflicted with alcoholism; the elderly; Parkinson’s disease patients; untreated diabetics; people on certain medications, including diuretics and antihistamines; and those addicted to psychotropic drugs, like cocaine.
Also known as sunstrike or thermic fever, heat stroke occurs when our bodies are no longer able to control its temperature – in other words, it’s life-threatening and requires immediate treatment.

Causes
Medical sources suggest heat stroke may come about after working or exercising in hot conditions without drinking enough fluids.
Why we need more liquids in the body, especially this summer? They help cool us down by allowing the body to produce sweat.
Liquids are also necessary for bodily functions.

Heavy
Health experts also warn heavy clothing and some skin conditions contribute to heat stroke, noting, there is a difference between heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
When suffering from heat exhaustion, they sweat profusely; whereas the body stops sweating in heat stroke.
The loss of fluids can contribute to low blood pressure, brain damage, and death./WDJ
