Gilas Pilipinas is set for a tall task against New Zealand as it resumes its campaign in the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.

The nationals are seeking to recover from their 66-69 loss to the Tall Blacks last February on home soil as the Philippines eyes a better position heading into the second round of the qualifiers.

But while their rematch will be an away game, Gilas star Dwight Ramos is still expecting the atmosphere that comes with the virtual home-court advantage provided by the Filipino community in Auckland.

“It’s really big. It’s a nice opportunity to play New Zealand,” said Ramos, as Gilas carries momentum from its tuneup wins over the Manawatu Jets and the Franklin Bulls.

“The last time that we were there, almost the whole crowd was Filipinos. Even though it’s away, it was still like a home game for us,” added the fan-favorite swingman.

While it ended in a 70-87 defeat in February 2025 during the first round of that year’s Asia Cup qualifiers, Ramos was among those who provided a spark for Gilas, finishing with eight points, two rebounds and one assist.

Gilas is now seeking to end the third window of the World Cup qualifiers on a high note, with the team currently tied with New Zealand for second place in Group A at 2-2.

But aside from seeking a top-two finish heading into the second round, Ramos is also determined to repay the support they have been receiving from the Filipino fans overseas.

“It’s another chance to try and go again,” he said.

Ramos and company will battle the Tall Blacks on Friday, July 3 at 3:00 p.m., before flying to Australia to take on the Boomers on July 6 at 6:30 p.m. (ABS-CBN News)
