Negros Occidental is projected to be largely spared from the severe dry conditions typically associated with the El Niño phenomenon, based on the latest climate outlook from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Irene Bel Ploteña, chief of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said recent monitoring by Pagasa indicates the western sections of the Philippines, including the Visayas, where Negros Occidental is located, are not expected to experience the most intense dry spell effects of the phenomenon.

According to the weather bureau’s projections, there is a 92 percent likelihood of El Niño developing during the June-July-August period.

The weather pattern may persist into early 2027 and is expected to affect large parts of the country.

Despite this, rainfall conditions in western areas are forecast to remain relatively stable.

From June to September, most provinces, including Negros Occidental, are expected to receive near-normal rainfall levels, ensuring sufficient water supply for agriculture and daily consumption.

Ploteña noted that between July and August, rainfall in western regions may even range from normal to above-normal levels, reducing the risk of water shortages or drought conditions commonly associated with El Niño episodes.

Weather trends are also expected to shift toward heavier rainfall toward the end of the year.

From October to December, western Luzon and the Visayas may experience more frequent and intensified rain events.

Authorities said this outlook provides reassurance for local agriculture and water resource management, as stable rainfall conditions are expected to support crop production and reduce drought-related risks across the province./CJ, WDJ
