A former member of a communist-linked militia group voluntarily surrendered to authorities in Negros Occidental, as government forces intensified efforts to encourage rebels and supporters to return to the fold of the law.

The surrender took place at the headquarters of the 2nd Negros Occidental Provincial Mobile Force Company at Sitio San Roque in Hinigaran town’s Barangay Gargato at 2:04 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, the Police Regional Office in the Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) said in a report.

The surrenderer was identified as a former member of the Yunit Militia under the dismantled Central Negros 2 of the Komiteng Rehiyon – Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor.

Authorities said the successful surrender was the result of coordinated efforts between the military units.

As part of the government’s reintegration program for former rebels, the surrenderer received financial assistance and a sack of rice from PRO-NIR.

After undergoing proper documentation procedures, the individual was later turned over to family members.

Police officials renewed their appeal to remaining insurgents and supporters to abandon armed struggle, reject extremist ideology, and take advantage of government programs aimed at helping former rebels rebuild their lives.

PRO-NIR said the government remains ready to provide livelihood assistance, social support and community-based development programs for individuals who choose to surrender peacefully.

The regional police office also emphasized that security forces will continue strengthening peace and anti-insurgency initiatives in the region to end the local communist armed conflict, improve community trust, and ensure public safety and sustainable development./CJ, WDJ
