The Sagay City government will install additional closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and improve street lighting near the State University of Northern Negros (SUNN) following reports of sexual harassment incidents involving students.
Sagay Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva said the concern was formally raised by university officials led by Renante Egcas during a meeting on May 5, prompting the city government to immediately coordinate security measures with local authorities and transport groups.
Initial investigations indicated that some suspects were allegedly tricycle drivers operating without proper registration, making identification and monitoring more difficult for authorities.
To address the incidents, the mayor convened the city’s peace and order committee along with tricycle operators and drivers’ associations to discuss tighter security and transport monitoring around SUNN.
Among the measures being planned are the installation of CCTV cameras in the university vicinity to transport terminals and other strategic areas, as well as the addition of streetlights along the road connecting SUNN to Barangay Kauswagan to improve nighttime visibility and student safety.
Cueva warned transport operators and drivers that harassment against students would not be tolerated, stressing that individuals found responsible would face legal action.
The mayor also advised students to remain vigilant by traveling in groups when possible, taking note of tricycle franchise numbers or driver identification cards, and choosing registered public utility vehicles for easier tracking and monitoring.
Meanwhile, the SUNN administration thanked the city government, police authorities and the peace and order committee for their immediate response and coordination in addressing safety concerns near the campus.
The university also urged students to promptly report suspicious activities and harassment incidents to authorities to help strengthen campus and community security efforts./CJ, WDJ
