Authorities are monitoring the possibility of intensified recruitment activities by rebel groups following a deadly encounter at Barangay Salamanca in Negros Occidental’s Toboso town that left 19 individuals dead.
Police Lt. Colonel Joem Malong, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office in the Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR), said the recent clash may prompt insurgent groups to step up efforts to replenish their ranks, particularly by targeting schools and vulnerable communities.
Malong warned that such groups may exploit the aftermath of the encounter to lure new members, urging the public to remain vigilant and not be deceived by promises that could ultimately put lives at risk.
“Rebel groups may take advantage of the situation to boost their recruitment, especially among the youth,” Malong said, emphasizing the need for stronger community awareness and cooperation with authorities.
In response, law enforcement agencies, in coordination with local government units, are set to roll out assistance programs for communities affected by the encounter.
These include support services aimed at preventing further radicalization and ensuring the safety and welfare of residents.
