Alexandra Eala bowed out early in the 2026 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix after absorbing a 6-1, 6-4 straight-sets defeat to Leylah Fernandez in their opening-round encounter in Stuttgart, Germany.
Fernandez, who has Filipino roots but is representing Canada, proved too steady and efficient as she secured an easy victory over the young Negrense tennis sensation.
Eala struggled to find her rhythm throughout the match, particularly on serve, where she managed just 52 percent on her first serves and won only 40 percent of points on her second delivery.
Fernandez, in contrast, capitalized on her opportunities, winning 87 percent of her second-serve points while converting four of eight break chances.
The 20-year-old Filipina also found it difficult to keep pace in extended rallies, with Fernandez dominating the baseline exchanges and finishing with a 63-46 edge in total points won.
The Canadian also controlled the match’s tempo, winning 12 games compared to Eala’s five.
Despite showing flashes of competitiveness, including two aces and a better double-fault count, Eala was unable to sustain momentum as Fernandez strung together runs of up to five consecutive games.
In a post-game interview, Fernandez likened her matchup with Eala to facing a “mirror image” due to their striking similarities in playing style and on-court tendencies, making the contest both challenging and familiar.
“Oh man, 100 percent,” Fernandez said when asked if it felt like playing against herself.
“I remember watching her play a couple of years back at the Rafael Nadal Academy, and she was playing super fast,” she said.
“I remember telling my coach at the time, ‘Wow, she plays quick.’ So it was like a mirror because he said, ‘Look, it’s exactly like you. So just enjoy figuring it out and have fun,’” she shared.
The loss marked another early exit for Eala in the WTA 500 clay-court tournament, while Fernandez advanced to the next round, continuing her campaign in one of the key lead-up events to Roland Garros./ASC, WDJ
