After achieving a historic silver medal finish in Asia, the Gilas Pilipinas Women have now booked a ticket to the FIBA 3×3 World Cup.
The Gilas Women were initially denied outright entry to the World Cup by European giant Lithuania in their first game in the final, 16-21.
The Philippines had one more shot to get the third and final ticket to the world stage as they went up against hosts Singapore.
The tandem of Kacey dela Rosa and veteran Afril Bernardino led Gilas to a four-point cushion halfway into the match, not letting the host team get close.
Dela Rosa scored three straight points to put Gilas Women ahead 15-8 with 3:31 minutes left on the clock.
Jermaine Lim Jia Ying tried to keep the World Cup hopes of Singapore alive with a bucket in the last two minutes, 16-9.
Bernardino iced the game with free throws, 21-10, clinching the third and final World Cup ticket in the women’s tournament.
Dela Rosa finished with 11 points, outscoring the entire Singapore team. Bernardino added six markers, while Cacho had four points in the victory.
“I enjoy playing in FIBA, representing the Philippines. I’m proud we got the slot in the FIBA World Cup this year,” Bernardino said in the post-game interview.
This marks the first appearance of Gilas Women in the World Cup since 2018, when the tournament was held in Bulacan.
