Preparations are in full swing for an international basketball event after the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) confirmed that Bacolod City will host the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Women’s Tournament this June.
SBP Executive Director Erika Caitlin Dy recently met with Bacolod Mayor Greg Gasataya to coordinate key aspects of the tournament, including logistics, partnerships and overall event planning.
The meeting marked a significant step in organizing the regional competition, which is expected to feature six teams from across Southeast Asia, including the Philippine national squad.
Dy was joined by several SBP officials, including technical head Andrew Teh, Zone 7 director Tony Agustin, assistant zone directors Dexter Dy and Nico Lopingco, and Negros Occidental Provincial Director Mark Jomalesa, along with other regional staff.
City Administrator Mark Mayo represented the local government during the meeting and expressed confidence in Bacolod’s ability to host the tournament.
Mayo highlighted the city’s growing reputation as a destination for both sports and tourism in the Negros Island Region.
The upcoming competition is seen as an opportunity for Bacolod to showcase not only its sports facilities but also its culture and hospitality, while providing an economic boost through increased visitor activity.
Dy underscored the importance of strong local government support, noting that Bacolod’s commitment reinforces the country’s capability to stage international basketball events.
City officials have pledged full backing for the tournament, citing its potential to promote tourism, engage the community, and encourage greater participation in sports, particularly among women.
Organizers are expected to hold additional coordination meetings in the coming weeks to finalize details such as venues, security arrangements, accommodations, and event programming.
The exact schedule and final list of participating teams will be announced at a later date./ASC, WDJ
