Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson has called on residents to remain calm and avoid panic buying as fuel prices and basic commodity costs continue to rise.

Lacson issued the appeal following an online briefing with national officials, where local chief executives were updated on the country’s fuel supply situation and response measures.

He said the Department of Energy (DOE) assured local leaders that the country’s petroleum supply remains sufficient for at least 30 days.

According to Lacson, Energy Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella also informed them that the national government is exploring alternative fuel sources to stabilize supply amid global price fluctuations.

To mitigate the impact, local government units have been advised to cut fuel consumption by up to 20 percent, particularly by limiting non-essential travel and reducing vehicle usage.

Despite the conservation measures, Lacson noted that regular fuel allocations of 5,000 to 10,000 liters will continue, especially for key sectors such as large sugar farms, ensuring that essential agricultural operations remain uninterrupted.

He added that the DOE maintains that current fuel price adjustments are aligned with international market trends.

“Whatever is normal for these farms can continue,” Lacson said, emphasizing the need to balance conservation efforts with economic activity.

Amid the situation, the governor also urged Negrenses to practice prudence, adopt austerity measures, and remain united, even calling on the public to offer prayers as the province navigates the ongoing challenges./CJ, WDJ
