Negros Occidental is preparing financial assistance for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who may be stranded or displaced amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, as local authorities intensify coordination with national agencies to facilitate repatriation efforts.

Provincial Administrator Atty. Rayfrando Diaz II said the Capitol is responding to calls for help through its provincial help desk, particularly from residents affected by disrupted travel.

He cited the case of a resident from Isabela town who was bound for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but was diverted back to Manila from Hong Kong.

Provincial officials are now coordinating the individual’s return to the province, noting that extended stays could result in higher costs.

Diaz added that financial aid is being readied for displaced workers and will be released once arrival data are verified through the province’s database.

He stressed that repatriation for OFWs still in the Middle East will be handled by appropriate national agencies, while the provincial government stands ready to extend support upon their arrival in Negros Occidental.

Hotline

Meanwhile, the Bacolod City government has activated a hotline and established a help desk to assist OFWs and residents with relatives affected by the regional situation.

Mayor Greg Gasataya said the city has received several inquiries regarding the safety of Bacolodnons abroad, with most reporting that they are currently safe.

Gasataya said the city is closely coordinating with the Department of Migrant Workers to provide guidance, support and any necessary assistance to affected families.

“We encourage everyone affected to reach out so we can provide the help they need. Hoping and praying for everyone’s safety,” the city government said in a statement.

Those seeking help may contact 0930-877-5097 or visit the help desks at the Bacolod City Government Center lobby./CJ, WDJ
