Negrense rising star Alexandra Eala bowed out of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after absorbing a 6-0, 6-2 defeat to World’s No. 4 Coco Gauff in their quarterfinal clash at Center Court in Dubai on Thursday night, February 19 (Philippine time).
Gauff wasted little time imposing her game, racing through the opening set and maintaining firm control in the second to close out the match in straight sets.
The American won 12 of the 14 games played, keeping Eala under constant pressure from both the baseline and return.
The 19-year-old Gauff held a clear advantage in overall production, finishing with 55 total points while limiting Eala to 33.
She converted six of her nine break-point opportunities, consistently breaking through the Filipina’s service games and preventing any sustained momentum.
Eala struggled to establish her serve despite landing 61 percent of her first serves, slightly higher than Gauff’s 55 percent.
However, she won just 32 percent of points on her first delivery and managed to hold serve only once in the match.
In contrast, Gauff was highly effective behind her serve, winning 74 percent of her first-serve points and 64 percent on her second serve.
Her ability to neutralize Eala’s returns and dictate rallies proved decisive throughout the contest.
The American also excelled on the return, collecting 26 receiving points compared to Eala’s 19.
At one stage, Gauff strung together 10 straight games, turning the match into a one-sided affair early on.
Although Gauff committed eight double faults, she offset those miscues with aggressive play and consistent shot-making.
Eala, who had just one double fault, won only 14 service points overall, underscoring the difficulty she faced against Gauff’s relentless pressure.
The result highlighted the gap in experience between the established top-five player and the 18-year-old Filipina, who was competing in her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal appearance.
Still, Eala’s breakthrough run in Dubai stands as a significant achievement, marking another step forward in her development as she continues to challenge some of the top names on the women’s tour./ASC, WDJ
