The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology Negros Island Region (BJMP-NIR) vowed to sustain strict security measures amid continued attempts to smuggle illegal drugs in jail facilities.

The latest incident was reported on February 7 when a female visitor was found possessing a sachet of shabu during inspection in the search area of the Metro Bacolod District Jail Male Dormitory-Annex in Barangay Handumanan in Bacolod City.

Jail Chief Inspector Juniven Rey Umadhay, BJMP-NIR spokesperson, said the continuing operations to flush out contraband and prevent the entry of illegal drugs aim to ensure the safety and well-being of both jail personnel and persons deprived of liberty.

“We cannot discern the brazenness of these visitors despite multiple interceptions at our gate. However, we will be ready and committed to implement all necessary security measures to thwart their illegal intentions,” he added.

The suspect, identified as Frezel Anne Erespe, 31, was visiting her 29-year-old partner, who is jailed for a drug-related case.

Erespe is detained at Police Station 10 and facing a case for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

In a statement, BJMP-NIR Director Jail Chief Supt. Brendan Fulgencio said the region’s jail personnel remain committed to upholding jail security and maintaining a drug-free environment.

“This incident highlights the professionalism and alertness of our personnel. Their commitment plays a crucial role in safeguarding our jails and reinforcing public trust in the BJMP,” he added.

Last December 23, a jail officer intercepted two sachets of shabu and dried marijuana leaves placed inside a ziplock plastic bag during the conduct of routine inspection at the Negros Occidental District Jail-Male Dormitory in Bago City.

The items were found inside a homemade clay stove brought in by a visitor identified as James Diaz Jr., a resident of Barangay Sum-ag, Bacolod City. (PNA)
