Bacolod City Mayor Greg Gasataya has ordered a formal investigation into allegations that two employees of the City Treasurer’s Office were involved in illegal nighttime tax collection and the issuance of unofficial receipts, as he renewed his call for the business sector to report any corruption-related concerns.
Gasataya confirmed that the City Legal Office immediately initiated an investigation after complaints against the two employees were filed last week.
He said authorities are now awaiting the office’s findings and recommendations before further action is taken.
The mayor assured the public that the city government would act decisively based on the results of the investigation, emphasizing accountability and equal treatment for all.
Gasataya raised the issue during a meeting with business groups on Monday, February 2, stressing that transparency and cooperation from the private sector are vital in addressing irregular practices within city offices.
He reiterated the appeal during a press briefing, assuring business owners that reporting wrongdoing will not affect the processing of their permits or transactions with the city.
Gasataya acknowledged that some business owners remain hesitant to file complaints due to fear of possible repercussions but emphasized that tolerating such practices only allows corruption to persist.
He also noted that similar incidents had been reported even before his administration, underscoring the need for sustained reforms.
According to Gasataya, reminders and stricter monitoring of city employees have already resulted in improvements in some areas, signaling that the city government is serious about stopping irregular activities.
He said illegal practices will not be tolerated once sufficient evidence is established.
The mayor again urged the business community to continue working with the city government in promoting good governance and strengthening public trust in Bacolod City./CJ, WDJ
