Negrense tennis star Alexandra Eala used her homecoming victory at the Philippine Women’s Open singles event to deliver a message of individuality and growth to aspiring athletes.
In a post-game presser after her 6-1, 6-2 victory over Russian Alina Charaeva on Monday night, January 26, Eala stressed that success should be measured by personal progress rather than imitation.
“My message [to aspiring athletes] is to not try to be like me or be the next Alex Eala. They should strive to be their best selves,” Eala remarked.
The 20-year-old said competing in the Philippines for the first time as a professional made the moment even more meaningful, as she relished playing in front of a home crowd that brought energy and enthusiasm to the matches.
Eala also highlighted the broader impact of the Philippine Women’s Open on the local tennis scene, saying it provides both exposure and opportunity for fans and players alike.
“[The Philippine Women’s Open] is a great platform for tennis to grow in the Philippines and for people to connect with the sport,” she said.
Beyond her own performance, Eala took time to commend her fellow Filipina players who earned spots in the main draw, noting the value of competing on a high-level international stage.
“I’m super proud of the fact that they were part of the draw. Just the experience you gain from the tournament and the people you meet is something money can’t buy,” she added.
The Philippine Women’s Open marks a significant milestone for women’s tennis in the country, with Eala’s presence and success further boosting interest in the WTA 125 event and the future of the sport in the Philippines./CJ, WDJ
