The Department of Health (DOH) in Western Visayas has warned the public against the use of “boga” or improvised “bamboo cannon” during the Yuletide season, urging everyone to practice safer and healthier holiday celebrations.

During a “Ligtas Christmas and New Year Celebration” press conference at the Philippine Information Agency (PIA)-6 office, DOH – Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH-WVCHD) Medical Officer III Dr. Fritzi Dequito said cases of fireworks-related injuries (FWRI) have increased in the region following the pandemic, with boga topping the list of causes.

“I would like to emphasize that one of the highest reasons for FWRI is boga. Although the police are doing their best, based on our database, boga is the number one cause of fireworks-related injuries seen in our emergency rooms,” Dequito said.

Boga-related injuries commonly affect the hands, fingers, and eyes. While DOH-WVCHD could not provide comprehensive regional data, Dequito said that four out of the 16 fireworks-related injury cases recorded in Iloilo City in 2024 were caused by boga.

Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) Director Colonel Kim Legada reminded the public that boga, regardless of the materials used, is prohibited under Republic Act No. 7183 (Firecrackers Law), and Executive Order No. 28, series of 2017.

Legada added that Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Trenas has also issued an executive order banning the use of illegal firecrackers in the city.

“What we can do is intensify our patrols and confiscate these items. We also appeal to our force multipliers, especially barangay officials, to help enforce the executive order,” he said.

Alongside firecracker safety, the DOH also warned against health risks associated with excessive eating and unsafe food practices during the holidays.

The agency has launched its “Ligtas Christmas” campaign in Western Visayas amid data showing a post-holiday surge in cases of diabetes, hypertension, and other lifestyle-related illnesses.

Health officials said years of post-holiday records show an increase in patients seeking medical care in January due to complications triggered by rich and excessive festive meals.

The campaign is anchored on three pillars: Tamang Pagkain (proper eating), Ehersisyo (exercise), and Disiplina (discipline).

“This is a critical season marked by calorie-dense food, sugary drinks, and reduced physical activity,” Dequito said, noting that many patients returning to clinics after the holidays cite binge eating and prolonged inactivity as triggers of their conditions.

The DOH urged the public to celebrate responsibly, stressing that safety and moderation remain key to a truly joyful and healthy Christmas and New Year. (PIA Iloilo)
