The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) has called on all 61 barangays in the city to strengthen public awareness and community-based campaigns against the use of dangerous firecrackers as the Christmas and New Year celebrations approach.

In a recently approved resolution, the SP emphasized the importance of protecting public safety during the holiday season, a period traditionally marked by a rise in firecracker-related injuries, fires and property damage.

The resolution underscores the need for the strict and consistent implementation of Oplan Kontra Paputok and other similar safety programs aimed at ensuring safe, healthy and responsible holiday celebrations.

Councilor Caesar Distrito stressed that barangays, as the frontline units of community governance, play a crucial role in the success of any public safety initiative.

Their active involvement in information dissemination, monitoring and enforcement, he said, is vital to curbing the risks associated with firecracker use.

The SP further encouraged a unified and intensified citywide information drive utilizing social media platforms, barangay assemblies, posters, public announcements, and partnerships with schools and civic organizations to reach more residents.

Aside from discouraging the use of illegal and dangerous firecrackers, the resolution also promotes safer alternatives such as non-explosive noisemakers, regulated community fireworks displays, and strict compliance with existing laws and ordinances./CJ, WDJ
