Local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental have been ordered to preemptively evacuate their residents living in high-risk areas due to the threat of Tropical Depression “Wilma.”

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, in an executive order, directed that flood, landslide and storm surge-prone areas be vacated to secure lives and property amid the new weather disturbance.

The governor emphasized that evacuation activities must be done orderly, while evacuation centers must have an adequate supply of water, food, medicines, power, and sanitation facilities to maintain the dignity of evacuees and ensure their welfare and well-being.

“LDRRMCs [Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils], with uniformed personnel and barangay officials, shall enforce [the directive] and assist residents,” the order further read.

For residents who refuse to evacuate despite imminent danger, forced evacuation will be implemented by the authorities.

With the anticipated effects of “Wilma,” the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has now declared a Red Alert status for their Emergency Operations Center.

Likewise, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in the Negros Island Region (NIR) maintains the Red Alert Status of its EOC due to the continued restiveness of Kanlaon Volcano and the risks associated with “Wilma.”

A Red Alert signifies the highest level of alertness “to address an ongoing or in anticipation of an imminent emergency,” according to the OCD.

As per tropical cyclone bulletin issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, “Wilma” is forecast to pass through northern and central Negros Occidental over the weekend.

It is also expected to cause heavy rainfall in Negros Occidental until Sunday, December 7, based on the weather advisory, which warns of possible impacts such as localized flooding, especially in urban and low-lying areas, and those near rivers. Landslides are also possible in susceptible areas.

“Wilma” is the fourth consecutive tropical cyclone to hit Negros Occidental in recent weeks, after “Tino,” “Uwan” and “Verbena.” (PIA-Negros Occidental)
