The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Negros Oriental called on the public to notify them of businesses taking advantage of the impact of Typhoon “Tino” (international name “Kalmaegi”) to hike commodity prices.

Krystle Jade Bato, spokesperson for DTI-Negros Oriental, told the Philippine News Agency yesterday that they have been tracking consumer goods prices for two days after receiving reports of alleged price surges.

“So far, we have not received an official complaint regarding any business establishment for raising the prices of essential items,” Bato said.

She said they received reports of people stockpiling food, batteries, flashlights, and similar items ahead of the typhoon.

Bato assured that there is no shortage of essential goods despite the heightened urgency in advance purchases.

A province-wide monitoring continues even after the storm has passed as another weather disturbance threatens the country.

The DTI is urging people to stay calm and not engage in panic buying during disasters or adverse weather conditions as the agency ensures enough supply of basic commodities and other essentials. (PNA)
