Chess prodigy Ellaine Summer Abanco, a student of STI West Negros University, captured four medals in the recently concluded Batang Pinoy National Championships held in General Santos City.

Competing in the under-14 girls chess division, Abanco clinched one gold, one silver and two bronze medals, capping off a stellar campaign that highlighted her growing reputation as one of the country’s most promising young players.

The 14-year-old standout showcased remarkable consistency throughout the weeklong tournament, which drew hundreds of participants from across the Philippines vying for supremacy in various youth sports disciplines.

Her composure under pressure and ability to recover from early setbacks impressed both coaches and officials.

Her victory adds to a string of strong performances over the past year, as Abanco has steadily made her mark in regional and national chess tournaments.

With every outing, she continues to refine her strategic play and mental toughness — qualities essential for success on the competitive chess circuit.

Abanco’s achievement not only underscores her talent and determination but also reflects the importance of family support and grassroots sports programs in nurturing young Filipino athletes.

Her recent triumph is seen as another step toward her goal of representing the country in international competitions./ASC, WDJ
