The People’s Coalition for Good Governance (PCGG) has called on the Bacolodnons to demand transparency and accountability amid alleged corruption in flood control projects, criticizing the silence of local officials on the issue.

PCGG convenor Wennie Sancho said the controversy highlights the need for stronger public vigilance, especially with billions of pesos allocated for flood mitigation projects nationwide.

“In these perilous times, where corruption has ravaged our country, we issue this call to action because of the silence of our local officials on this shameful and excessive corruption,” Sancho said in a statement.

He questioned the absence of public statements from the local officials and members of the city council regarding the alleged anomalies.

“The silence is indeed deafening. Are they unaware, indifferent or compromised?” Sancho asked.

He warned that continued inaction from local leaders could erode public trust and fuel suspicions of possible complicity.

“Citizens expect leaders to speak out against corruption, especially when it involves public welfare. Transparency and accountability are crucial,” he added.

The coalition said flood control projects, instead of serving their intended purpose, have become “a conduit for corruption, draining not just resources but also trust in those elected to serve.”

“It is time for us to stand up and reclaim our rights that were stolen from us by the corrupt politicians, contractors and Department of Public Works and Highways officials. They had stripped us of our dignity,” he added.

Sancho urged Bacolodnons to unite in pressing for a full investigation into the flood control projects, stressing that public officials must show commitment to good governance.

“The people of Bacolod City deserve answers. Your silence is perceived as complicity. We will not let the corrupt few dictate our future,” he said./CJ, WDJ
