The Bacolod City council has called on the City Health Office (CHO) and all barangays to step up disease prevention measures against dengue, leptospirosis and influenza as health authorities have reported a sharp rise in cases amid the rainy season.
Councilor Caesar Distrito, who authored the resolution, stressed that community-based interventions are crucial to protecting public health and preventing hospitals from being overwhelmed.
CHO data showed that as of July 5, 2025, Bacolod recorded 532 dengue cases, marking a 148.6 percent increase from the same period last year, with two deaths.
Leptospirosis cases also climbed by 50 percent, with 12 infections and six fatalities reported as of late July.
“This resolution is about saving lives. Dengue, leptospirosis and influenza are preventable diseases. Through intensified information drives, cleanup campaigns and early detection measures, we can significantly reduce infections,” Distrito said.
He highlighted the Department of Health’s 4S Kontra Dengue Strategy — search and destroy mosquito breeding sites; self-protection; seek early consultation; and support fogging or spraying — as well as barangay-level programs against leptospirosis and flu.
“Barangays serve as our frontline in health promotion and disease prevention through cleanup drives, health education and early case detection,” he added.
Distrito underscored that a coordinated response among the city government, barangays and residents is vital.
“This is a collective responsibility. By working together, we can protect lives and avoid unnecessary deaths during this rainy season.”/CJ, WDJ
