Rising Filipino boxer Flint Jara made his hometown Negros Occidental’s Bago City proud after striking gold at the 2025 Belt and Road International Boxing Tournament held recently in Xinjiang, China.

The Bago City government, led by Mayor Mayette Javellana, celebrated Jara’s achievement, calling him an inspiration to young athletes.

“Your victory has brought great pride to Bago and the entire nation,” Javellana said in a congratulatory statement.

Meanwhile, the Philippines had an impressive showing overall, collecting multiple podium finishes in both the main tournament and the youth competition.

Althea Shine Pores captured a silver medal, while her sister Shairylle Pores claimed bronze during the youth boxing event held from August 26 to 29.

Also making waves were Claudine Veloso, who brought home another silver medal, while Tyler Tanap earned a bronze.

Patricia Mae Sumalinog also secured a bronze medal for the national team.

The tournament proved to be an important stage for the Philippines’ promising fighters, who are now setting their sights on future international competitions like the Asian Games and World Championships.

Their medal haul — one gold, two silvers and three bronzes — highlights the country’s depth of boxing talent.

The Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines praised the team’s performance, crediting years of grassroots training and dedication. /ASC, WDJ
