A six-hour curfew is now in effect in Bacolod City’s Barangay Alangilan to curb motorcycle drag racing after residents complained about loud noises disturbing the peace during nighttime.
Barangay watchmen have begun imposing a curfew from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. through nightly patrols to monitor motorcycle traffic while enforcing new rules.
Village officials said modified motorcycle mufflers have become a persistent nuisance for residents, with some reporting nightly disturbances from groups allegedly racing through the barangay.
“While we understand the attraction of the city lights, we cannot allow peace and order to be compromised. Our goal is not to stop tourism but to stop the abuse,” a village official said.
Earlier, motorcycle drag racing often took place in the upland areas of Alangilan, where riders were drawn to the scenic nighttime view overlooking the city.
Meanwhile, village officials also vowed to strictly implement an ordinance on open mufflers, which prohibits motorcycles with noisy, modified exhaust systems from roaming the area — particularly during curfew hours.
Under the new policy, loitering or staying on roads past curfew is prohibited unless individuals fall under exemptions such as students returning home from school, employees on night shifts, or those dealing with emergencies or other valid reasons.
Bacolod Mayor Greg Gasataya said there will be a reinforcement from the Bacolod City Police Office to assist barangay authorities in ensuring the curfew and muffler ordinance are effectively implemented.
“The city supports Barangay Alangilan’s efforts to preserve peace and safety for its residents. The city will provide police presence to ensure these measures are carried out properly,” Gasataya said./CJ, WDJ
