Bacolod City Mayor Greg Gasataya said the city government will enforce full transparency — particularly financial dealings — in all aspects in preparation for the highly anticipated MassKara Festival in October amid calls for greater public accountability.

Gasataya gave the assurance after the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) authorized him to sign a contract with Bacolod Gugma Foundation Inc., the official organizer of this year’s festivities.

He also stressed that the city’s involvement will include full participation from SP members, ensuring oversight and public trust.

In a statement, the Bacolod Gugma Foundation responded to the city’s call for accountability by committing to responsible resource management and community-centered event organizing.

The organizer said this year’s edition will aim to bring the spirit of MassKara closer to the barangays and underrepresented communities.

This year’s MassKara Festival officially opens on October 1, with major highlights set from October 17 to 19.

This year’s theme is grounded in inclusivity, resilience and cultural celebration.

Gasataya reiterated that the festival is not just about spectacle but about reinforcing unity and pride across sectors.

“MassKara has always been a celebration of who we are as Bacolodnons. This year, we’re making sure that celebration includes everyone, from the grassroots up,” he said.

With just two months to go, the city is ramping up preparations to ensure that this year’s festival delivers not just in color and sound, but in transparency, inclusivity and lasting community impact.

Inclusive events, sectoral spotlight

Festival Director Rodney Ascalon said inclusivity is at the heart of the programming.

“MassKara has always been about unity in joy. This year, we are making a stronger effort to ensure that every sector is seen and celebrated,” Ascalon said.

The city is set to revive the street and arena dance competition — a crowd favorite last held in 2019 — and is also introducing targeted events for the LGBTQ+ community, senior citizens, local artists, and youth groups.

Organizers will also host a grand after-party on October 26, featuring DJs, live performances, and a laid-back atmosphere.
