The first day of voters’ registration for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) in Dumaguete City proceeded smoothly, with only one minor glitch, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said on Friday, August 1.
In an interview, City Election Officer Ian Macaraya told the Philippine News Agency that the problem involved the signature pads of the Voter Registration System’s (VRS) machines, which needed to be replaced.
“The system did not detect the signatures of the registrants on the pads, but this is just a temporary setback that was resolved immediately,” he said.
He explained the problem was due to a driver that was not updated.
Voters’ registration in other areas in the province also reported the same problem.
Registration of voters in capital Dumaguete was held at the Comelec office and the Robinsons Place Dumaguete.
The majority of those who lined up for registration were young people, mostly students, who are qualified to vote for their SK officials.
The Comelec clarified that only individuals who will turn 15 on or before December 1, 2025, can sign up for the BSKE.
Based on the initial Comelec tally, there were 264 first-day registrants in Dumaguete City. The registration closed at 5:00 p.m. (PNA)
