Negrense Kathlyn Bugna has further solidified her remarkable rise in Philippine junior tennis by achieving a commanding triple-title victory, which includes two titles in girls’ singles, at the VARAC National Juniors Tournament held in Cebu City.
The 14-year-old prodigy from Negros Occidental’s La Carlota City has enhanced her reputation as one of the nation’s most promising young talents with this latest successful endeavor.
Bugna successfully defended her title in her age group, defeating her doubles partner Theriz Zapatos with a score of 6-1, 6-1 in a dominant final at the Villa Aurora Racquet Club courts.
Subsequently, she demonstrated her resilience in a challenging 16-and-under championship match, overcoming Donna Mae Diamante in a thrilling three-set encounter, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, thereby achieving another victory.
To conclude her remarkable performance, Bugna and Zapatos collaborated to secure the 14-and-under girls’ doubles championship with an impressive 8-1 victory over Sabrina Aldeguer and Isobel Alipo-on.
This adds to Bugna’s collection of titles following her previous successes at the MAC Crankit tournament in Pasig City and earlier PPS-PEPP events in Iloilo, Bacolod, Roxas, and Kalibo.
Bugna’s exceptional achievements earned her yet another MVP award in the Group 2 tournament, which is part of the national grassroots tennis talent search./ASC, WDJ
