Negros Occidental is facing a dramatic rise in dengue fever cases this year, as the Provincial Health Office (PHO) reported a total of 1,692 cases as of April 19.

This marks a staggering 341.78 percent increase, higher than the 383 cases recorded in the same period last year, PHO said.

Bago City tops the list with the highest number of dengue cases at 333, including one death.

It is followed by La Carlota City with 145 cases, Kabankalan City (141), Cauayan town (85), Pulupandan town (69), Talisay City (58), Valladolid town (52), and Hinigaran town (50).

The cities of San Carlos and Silay recorded 103 and 91 cases, respectively, with one dengue-related death each.

PHO data shows that all 31 local government units in Negros Occidental have reported at least one suspected case of dengue, underscoring the widespread nature of the outbreak.

Seven dengue-related deaths were recorded as of April 19.

The age group most affected by dengue is 11 to 20 years old, but cases have been recorded across a wide age range — up to 94 years old.

Health authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and take preventive measures, such as eliminating mosquito breeding sites, using protective clothing, and seeking medical attention at the first sign of symptoms./JB, WDJ
