The Negros Occidental provincial government issued a health advisory in relation to the increasing number of typhoid fever cases in the province.

A 100 percent increase in cases has been reported as of January 18, higher by 40 cases reported in the same period in 2024.

The health advisory, signed by Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson on Friday, January 31, ensures the implementation of health protocols to prevent the spread of typhoid fever.

These include avoiding untreated water, boiling water for drinking, cooking food thoroughly, and consuming food within four hours of preparation, and refrigerating leftovers.

Residents are also advised to avoid unsanitary street food, wash hands properly before eating and after using the toilet, and maintain clean surroundings to prevent the breeding of flies.

The local government units have been urged to activate food handlers’ classes for vendors and food establishments as part of the control measures.

Typhoid fever, also known as enteric fever, is caused by the Salmonella typhi bacteria.

It is primarily transmitted through contaminated food and water or close contact with an infected person.

Symptoms of the disease include sustained high fever, headache, weakness, loss of appetite, abdominal discomfort, and either diarrhea or constipation.

Treatment typically involves the use of antibiotics, as prescribed by a physician./WDJ
