The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses clinched the top seed in the V-League Women’s Collegiate Challenge after a 25-15, 25-14, 25-23 sweep of the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons at the Paco Arena in Manila on Wednesday night, September 11.

Silaynon setter Cassie Carballo showcased her efficient ball distribution as she finished with 12 excellent sets to go with four markers as the Golden Tigresses stretched their unbeaten run to six games.

Angeline Poyos top-scored for the Golden Tigresses with 15 points, while Regina Grace Jurado ended with nine points, built on eight attacks and a block, to be named Player of the Game.

Golden Tigresses head coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes stated that the match against the Fighting Maroons served as an opportunity to try his rookie players more, like what happened in the third set.

“We’re working on our maturity, decision-making and judgment — those things, kasi ‘yung skills andun na eh,” Reyes said in a post-game interview.

“We’re enhancing them naman sa training, so we need namin ‘yung avenue like V-League na malaking opportunity lalo na sa rookies,” he added.

Kianna Olango tallied eight points, while Niña Ytang added seven markers for the Fighting Maroons, which dropped to a 3-3 win-loss slate and are out of the running for a Final 4 seat./ASC, WDJ
