Silay City Mayor Joedith Gallego called “political harassment” the proposed congressional investigation into the P1.5 billion loan secured by the city government for the construction of the new city hall and other facilities.
“I believe this is political harassment, given the proximity to the elections,” Gallego said.
He said there are no anomalies in his administration, especially in handling large budgets allocated for major projects of the city.
“We are prepared to address any concerns raised and demonstrate that all our actions are in line with the required processes,” Gallego said.
He said these projects went through the right process and had proper consultation before they were launched.
“They have no basis or evidence against us. All our actions are in accordance with the proper procedures,” Gallego said.
The loan proceeds were utilized for the construction of a new city hall, a city college, a sports stadium, and a new public market.
Gallego said he had no idea what the motives of the allegations against him are, but he insists that he is only doing his job as city mayor.
The inquiry is set to scrutinize whether the developments funded by the loan adhered to the necessary approvals and guidelines.
Earlier, Negros Occidental 3rd District Congressman Stephen Joseph “Caraps” Paduano claimed there had been irregularities in some city government transactions.
Paduano specifically noted that the Silay City Public Market, which is over 50 years old and recognized as a historical building, requires clearance from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines before any alterations can be made./JB, WDJ
